PMK founder leader S. Ramadoss on Saturday urged the Election Commission to adjourn the March 27 Pennagaram by-poll and disqualify the DMK candidate for alleged electoral malpractices.

Speaking to reporters here, he alleged that DMK workers had attacked PMK`s Election Working Committee president P. Velmurugan, MLA and party workers when they were caught distributing sarees, dhoties and Rs. 3,000 in cash to voters in Papparapatti and Pennagaram on Friday night.

Though they were overpowered and handed over to police, no action had been taken.

Similarly, PMK cadres got information that articles meant for distribution were stocked in a godown in these areas. But the police reportedly did not allow them to open the shutters.

Though Mr. Velumurugan contacted the Collector-in-charge DRO and demanded that action be taken, nothing had materialised.

Dr. Ramadoss said the Election Commission and the State Election Commission had been informed of the incidents in these two villages.

Dr. Ramadoss urged the EC to depute more observers immediately to monitor the situation and order action against the DMK workers or adjourn the poll date and disqualify the DMK candidate.

Dharmapuri Superintendent of Police R. Sudhakar said the petitions submitted by PMK have been received and that further action would be taken as per EC rules.
