Newborn’s death triggers protest

Relatives allege nurse attended the delivery in the absence of doctors

Alleging that the newly born baby boy died because a nurse attended the delivery in the absence of a doctor, relatives picketed the Primary Health Centre in Masanaickenpatti, and demanded action against the nurse and the doctor here on Tuesday.

Dineshbabu (26), a labourer of Sakthi Nagar was married to Baby (22) for one year. She was admitted to the hospital for delivery on Sunday. On Monday night, she developed labour pain and in the absence of doctors, nurse Sathya and her assistant Amudha carried out the delivery.

But the baby died later. Angered by the death of the baby, Dineshbabu and his relatives entered into altercation with the nurse and blamed them for the baby’s death.

They refused to receive the body and demanded action against the nurse. They said that they have asked the nurse to inform the doctors for carrying out the delivery. But the nurse failed to do so resulting in the death, they said. Ammapet police Inspector Nagaraj rushed to the spot and pacified them. He held talks with them and asked them to give a written complaint and assured of action.

Later, they received the body and left the PHC. Baby was also admitted to a private hospital in the city.

Deputy Director of Health Services Dr. Poongodi inspected the PHC and held inquiries with doctor, nurse and the assistant nurse. It was found that the baby developed complication and the nurse failed to inform the doctor about it. She assured to initiate action after inquiry.
