A special police team has unravelled the mystery over the disappearance of a woman two years ago by arresting two youths in this connection.
Police said P. Muththarasi (27) of Venmankudi went missing on February 25, 2014 and the Uvari police registered a case based on a complaint from her mother Bathrakaali.
When the investigation failed to yield any result, Bathrakaali filed a habeus corpus petition in the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court on August 25, 2015 and the court directed the Deputy Superintendent of Police, Valliyoor, to investigate the case.

The team led by P. Balaji, DSP, Valliyoor, found that the Naalaattinputhur police had registered a case on February 25, 2014 regarding an unidentified woman killed in a road accident under its jurisdiction.
The team found that the “accident victim” was Muththarasi. When the police tracked the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number of Muththarasi’s mobile phone, it led to the cracking of the case. Investigation established that the lady was in touch with S. Jayakumar (34) of Chinnamadankudiyiruppu near Sattankulam in Thoothukudi district over phone for quite some time and eloped with him on February 25, 2014 after he reportedly assured Muththarasi of marrying her. Even as Jayakumar and his friend P. Amalraj (22) of Arulur near Chinnamadankudiyiruppu were taking her to Madurai in the cargo autorickshaw of Jayakumar, the duo murdered Muththarasi even as they were crossing Naalaattinputhur and took the gold ornaments, weighing four sovereigns she was wearing and her mobile phone.
They threw the body on the four-lane national highway in a bid to show it as a road accident. The Naalaattinputhur police also treated it as a accident. The body was buried later.

When the special team started investigating the case, the police, with the IMEI Number found that calls were being made from the phone of Muththarasi to a lady at Sankarankovil. When the police interrogated the woman, she gave the all-important lead that she used to get calls from her relative Jayakumar, from whom the police extracted all information pertaining to this case.
Subsequently, the police arrested Jayakumar and Amalraj and remanded them in judicial custody.
