Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Sunday announced a slew of new measures aimed at arresting the trend of drop-out among students belonging to Backward Classes (BCs), Most Backward Classes (MBCs) and Minorities.
Ms. Jayalalithaa has ordered release of Rs 1.83 crore for improving the English communication skills of students staying in the hostels of colleges, polytechnics and Industrial Training Institutes (IITs) run for BCs, MBCs, de-notified communities and the minorities. Each student would get Rs 2,800.
She also hiked the prize money given to students from minority communities who secured the first three places in the district in the SSLC and Plus-Two examinations.

The government has already increased the prize money for BCs, MBCs and de-notified communities.
The Chief Minister sanctioned over Rs. 3.74 crore for providing bunker-cots to students of 103 hostels for BCs, MBCs and de-notified communities.
Another important announcement was the release of Rs 3.20 crore for increasing the grant given to improve the livelihood of poor Muslim women.
