Latest updates: Deep depression moves towards Andhra Pradesh

Four NDRF teams have been deployed in low lying areas and boats kept ready to rescue people in the event of flooding.

With parts of Tamil Nadu receiving rains for the third day on Wednesday, the Met department said the deep depression in the Bay of Bengal would bring heavy rains in north coastal areas of the State and Puducherry.

The >deep depression , that was lying over south-west Bay of Bengal and east of Chennai, lies 170 km south-east of Nellore. It is expected to move further in the north-eastward direction and intensify into a cyclone.

Rains in Andhra

IMD has said that rainfall at many places with heavy to very heavy rainfalls with isolated extremely heavy falls over south Andhra Pradesh coast during next 48 hours. Rainfall at many places with isolated heavy to very heavy falls likely over Rayalaseema and isolated heavy over coastal and south interior Karnataka during the next 48 hour.

Warning to fishermen

Fishermen are advised not to venture into sea along & off Tamil Nadu & Puducherry and south Andhra Pradesh, Kerala coasts and Lakshadweep area during next 48 hours.

7.10 p.m.: The deep depression over westcentral and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal moved nearly northwards at a speed of 10 kmph during past six hours and lay centred over at 1130 hrs IST of Wednesday about 130 km south-southeast of Nellore. The system is likely to move north-northeastwards along and off Andhra Pradesh coast and intensify into a cyclonic storm during next 24 hours. Thereafter it is likely to move northeastwards along and off north Andhra Pradesh & Odisha coasts during subsequent 48 hours.

7.10 p.m.: For Chennai, the sky condition is very likely to be overcast. Few spells of rain or thundershowers, heavy at times.

5:45 pm: The danger of heavy rainfall in excess of 25 CM in Chennai and neighbourhood, forecast last night, has abated with the weather system moving away but coastal areas of the state would continue to experience heavy rains for another 24 hours.

5:40 pm: Sparing Tamil Nadu, the deep depression over Bay of Bengal has moved to Andhra Pradesh coast and is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm by tomorrow, Met office said.

2.05 pm: Sea condition would be rough to very rough along and off north Tamil Nadu & Puducherry and south Andhra Pradesh coasts during next 48 hours.

1:50 pm : In the last 24 hours, Kelambakkam recorded 23 cm of rainfall, the highest so far.

1:40 pm : The system is likely intensify into a cyclonic storm in the next 48 hours.

1:30 pm: Under its influence, heavy rainfall is expected over north Coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry in the next 24 hours.

1:25 pm: Rainfall is also likely to occur at many places over south Andhra Pradesh coast during next 48 hours, it said.

1:00 pm: The State government on Tuesday directed District Collectors to take all precautionary measures. The Government has also set up a call centre with 1070 number to receive rainfall-related grievances.
