Justice S. Rajeswaran to head probe panel

Commission of Inquiry was announced by the CM to probe into the causes and circumstances leading to violence in the State over Jallikattu.

The Tamil Nadu government has named Justice S. Rajeswaran, a retired judge of the Madras High Court, to head the Commission of Inquiry (CoI) announced by Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam to probe into the causes and circumstances leading to the law and order disturbances in various parts of the State following the agitations demanding the conducti of jallikattu on January 23, 2017.

The G.O. of Public (Law & Order) Department dated January 31, 2017, stated that the Commission appointed as per the provisions of the Commissions of Inquiry Act, 1952, would complete its inquiry and submit its report within three months from the date of publication of the notification in the Tamil Nadu Government Gazette.

The terms of reference of the Commission of Inquiry would be to enquire into the causes and circumstances leading to the law and order disturbances on January 23, 2017, including damages to public and private properties. Besides, it would ascertain whether appropriate force was used as warranted by the circumstances and whether there were any excesses on the part of police officers, and if so, suggest the action to be taken and recommend suitable measures to prevent the recurrence of such incidents.
