Chief Minister Jayalalithaa has asked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to expedite the notification of the Final Order of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal and also to constitute the Cauvery Management Board immediately to safeguard the livelihood of the State’s farmers.
In her letter to the Prime Minister, Ms. Jayalalithaa recalled the memorandum she had presented to him on June 14 and her letter to him on October 17, in which she had requested notification of the final order of the Cauvery water disputes tribunal and the constitution of the board immediately.
Meanwhile, in the Supreme Court, during the course of the proceedings on December 5, counsel for all the States, including Karnataka, brought to the notice of the Court the fact that the final order of the tribunal was yet to be notified by the Centre, despite a statutory mandate stipulated in the Inter State Water Disputes Act, 1956.

The Supreme Court had ordered the Counsel for the Centre to seek instructions as to when the final order would be notified and report it to the court. Subsequently, the Cauvery Monitoring Committee in its 31st meeting on December 7 had categorically stated that the final order would be notified at the earliest but not later than the end of this month (December 2012).
At the meeting, it was also decided that once the award was notified, institutions like the Cauvery Monitoring Committee and Cauvery River Authority would cease to exist and new organisations like the Cauvery Management Board and Cauvery Regulation Committee would be constituted.

As the Supreme Court has taken record of the proceedings of the meeting of the Cauvery Monitoring Committee in its order on December 10, in which was stated by the Secretary, Ministry of Water Resources, that the final order of the tribunal would be notified before the end of December 2012, Ms. Jayalalithaa pointed it out and sought a positive response on the issue from the Prime Minister immediately.
