Fisherfolk of eight fishing habitations of Nagapattinam Taluk have commenced an indefinite strike, starting on Friday in protest against the attacks on fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy.

According to the fisherfolk, the indefinite strike is also to protest against the non-intervention and "callousness" of the Centre. Additionally, on October 6, they will stage a demonstration in front of the Central Post Office here as a token protest against the Centre.

Fishermen from Nagore Pattinacherry (Melapattinachery and Keezhapattinachery), Samundanpettai, NambiyarNagar, Aryanaatutheru, Keechankuppam, Akkaraipettai and Kallar have struck work to express solidarity and would not go into the sea for an indefinite period.
