Government clarification on tax exemption for Tamil films

November 02, 2010 12:05 am | Updated 12:05 am IST - CHENNAI:

The government has clarified that in the event of the release of Tamil films whose titles had not been approved for tax exemption, the producers have to pay the tax in full.

A committee comprising Commercial Taxes Secretary, Tamil Development Secretary and Tamil Development Director took decisions on giving exemption to films.

Explaining the position on the scheme of tax exemption for feature films that carried Tamil titles, a press release issued by the Chief Minister's office on Monday said that at least, the proper noun of the title should be in Tamil. Films including “Sivaji,” “Egan,” “Boss [alias] Baskaran,” “Goa” and “Enthiran” were given the tax exemption.

The release decried reports in a section of the press attributing political motives to the sanction of tax exemption for certain films.
