Two doctors and a staff nurse at the Government Hospital in Mettur who were involved in botched up surgery leading to eye infection for 20 patients were posted on deputation to other hospitals in the district.

Of the 23 patients who underwent cataract surgery at the hospital between June 14 and 16, 20 patients developed post-operative complications and were admitted to private hospitals in Salem and Coimbatore. Doctors said that their condition would be known only two weeks after their condition. The incident had sent shockwaves among the patients as the operation theatre in the hospital was closed temporarily.

Meanwhile, ophthalmologists R. Subha and P.V. Rajendran, who reportedly performed the surgeries, were posted on deputation to Government Hospital in Vazhapadi and Jalakandapuram respectively, until further orders. Staff nurse J. Kowsalya was posted on deputation to Government Hospital in Edappadi. Joint Director of Medical Services (in-charge) M.R. Inbasekaran said that people who visit the Mettur hospital felt uneasy to undergo treatment in the presence of these doctors. Since functioning of the hospital should not be affected, they were shifted. He said that two doctors were working at Mettur GH already on deputation only.
