Contempt notice to Tourism Secretary, TTDC Chairman

January 25, 2011 01:08 am | Updated 01:08 am IST - CHENNAI:

The Madras High Court on Monday directed the Tourism Secretary and Chairman of the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC) to “file individual replies as to why the proceedings of contempt be not issued against them for violating the order of the court.”

The First Bench comprising Justice M. Yusuf Eqbal and T.S.Sivagnanam gave the direction on a petition filed by advocate Pugalenthi, accusing Tourism Secretary S.S.Jawahar of violating the court order and issuing advertisements carrying the name of Tamil Maiyam for Chennai Sangamam.

Mr Jawahar is also the chairman of the TTDC.

Recalling the submission of the government pleader that there was absolutely no financial transaction between the government and the Tamil Maiyam and no advertisement would carry the organisation's name, Mr. Pugalenthi said the undertaking was subsequently violated.

“The buses deployed by the Metropolitan Transport Corporation for the festival displayed the name of Tamil Maiyam. The official invitation for the inaugural function showed the name of the organisation as one inviting dignitaries along with the Tourism and Culture department. The envelope of the invitation stated that Chennai Sangamam is organised by Tamil Maiyam,” he added.

The matter has been posted for February 7 for further hearing.
