VELLORE: The Tamil Nadu State Sand Lorry Owners Federation on Tuesday submitted a petition to the Collector to inspect the sand quarry at Poondi village, Walajah taluk, and take action on irregularities in sand supply.

S. Yuvaraj, the federation’s president, said no official of the Public Works Department or quarry contractors were present at the sand quarry at Poondi village

“A few anti-social elements have taken over the running of the quarry for the last 10 to 15 days. They are supplying sand to lorries that transport sand to Karnataka. Lorries from Chennai are made to wait for four days for one load,” he said.

As a result, they were unable to meet the sand requirements of Chennai. “Chennai requires at least 6,000 loads of sand a day, and gets its supply from quarries in Vellore and Villupuram. Only lorries transporting sand to Karnataka are being given preference but the bills issued mention the places as Hosur and Krishnagiri,” he said.

He urged the Collector and PWD officials to stop quarrying activity.
