Indian Coast Guard and AMET University on Thursday entered into a Memorandum of Understanding for bi-annual conduct of International Maritime Organisation level-II Oil pollution Preparedness Response and Co-operation (IMO-Level II OPRC) programme.
An agreement to this effect was signed by Inspector General A. Rajasekhar, Commander, Coast Guard Region (East) and Capt. S. Bhardwaj, Vice-Chancellor, AMET University. The agreement is valid for two years and it would be renewed periodically.
The IMO Level-II OPRC pollution response training is meant for senior/middle level managers of the oil industry and the ports and it will commence on July 26. Conforming to the IMO guidelines, the five-day course encompasses classroom instructions on oil spill assessment, combat techniques, planning, waste management, legislation, media relation, compensation and applicable claims, table top exercises, shore line clean up exercises and practical training on operations.

“It is a unique programme as there is no readymade solution for oil pollution as each shoreline is different. Moreover, candidates need not have to go abroad for such training. AMET will train 25 students and the cost per person is Rs.20,000,” said Capt. R.K. Kumar, Dean-STCW Studies, AMET University.
Capt. Bhardwaj said a joint research with Ennore Port on global warming would be taken up.
