The police have registered a case against A. Kaliyaperumal, brother of former Telecom Minister A. Raja, on the charges of bribing voters and misusing the vehicle allotted to an Independent to campaign for the DMK nominee.

Mr. Kaliyaperumal, who is also the chairman of the Andimuthu – Chinnapillai Chairtable Trust, a family trust of Mr. Raja, on Thursday wooed women members of the Manomani self-help group near Eraiyur village by promising a loan of Rs.2 lakh. He also bribed the voters in the village, according to complaints received by election officials. Sensing that the flying squad was rushing to the village, Mr. Kaliyaperumal sent off his car and switched over to a vehicle belonging to Ravichandran, an Independent.

The squad seized calendars carrying images of Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and former Union Telecom Minister A. Raja – campaign materials distributed without permission. The Mangalamedu police have registered case under Section 171(B); 171 (E) and 188 of Indian Penal Code against Mr. Kaliyaperumal on charges of bribery. A case has also been registered against the car driver, Akbar.
