Bus burning: death sentence to be carried out on October 8

Warrant fixing time and date issued to prison authorities

The death sentence for the three accused in the Dharmapuri bus burning case will be carried out at 6 a.m. on October 8.

First Additional District Sessions Judge Raghavan, as per Rule 177 of the Criminal Rules of Practice (Madras), issued a warrant fixing the time and date on Tuesday to the authorities concerned at Vellore Central Prison where the accused – Nedu alias Nedunchezhian, Ravindran and C. Muniappan – are lodged.

The trial court here received the judgment copy from the Supreme Court confirming the death sentence of the trio.

As per the CRP rule, from the date of receipt of judgment, not less than 21 days and not more than 28 days and within this period, a date will be fixed by the trial court for the execution of the sentence.

It should be communicated to the courts and jail authorities.

On February 16, 2007, the then First Additional District Sessions judge, D. Krishnaraja, awarded death sentence to the three.

They went in appeal. A Division Bench of the Madras High Court confirmed the death sentence on December 6, 2007.

To appeal to President

Vellore Special Correspondent writes:

The three have decided to appeal to President for commutation of their sentence to life imprisonment. They would also appeal to the Supreme Court to review its order.
