Burglars strike in temple; loot gold, silver and cash

Thieves broke into a temple on the Girivalam path and allegedly decamped with the deity’s gold crown, silver articles and cash from the hundiyal (collection box).

According to Tiruvannamalai Taluk police, burglars entered the Kuberan Perumal temple at Vengikkal after drilling a hole in the wall. When the temple was opened on Saturday morning, the deity’s crown weighing 12 sovereigns and a silver article weighing half kg— totally worth Rs. 1.3 lakh – were missing.

The

hundiyal had also been broke open and Rs. 40,000 stolen.

Tiruvannamalai taluk police registered a case and are conducting further investigations.

Man robbed of Rs. 5 lakh

A 58-year-old man was waylaid and robbed of Rs. 5 lakh in Tiruvannamalai on Friday night.

According to police, Palanisamy, an oil merchant residing in Salem, had come to town to collect money from his customers. At about 10 p.m., two persons, who had come in a motorbike, knocked him down and decamped with a bag containing cash at Asiliamman Koil Street.
