Baby recovers from Guillain-Barre syndrome

One-and-half-year-old boy S. Eashwar, who suffered from Guillain-Barre syndrome and was under ventilator for 100 days, ascended on the dais with his mother S. Easwari and received a gift from Collector N. Venkatachalam at a function held here on Friday, thanks to the effective care and treatment given by a team of doctors of Theni Government Medical College Hospital for more than four months.

Briefing the treatment, Dr. M. Balasubramanian said that Guillain-Barre syndrome was a rare but serious autoimmune disorder in which the immune system attacked the healthy nerve cells in the peripheral nervous system.

It could eventually cause paralysis. Recovery took longer period of time.

Moreover, prolonged use of a respirator (ventilator) was necessary, he added.

When the parents Suresh and Easwari brought this baby to the hospital, his condition was very critical. The muscles did not respond to the signals they received from the brain. The nerves were damaged.

The boy suffered from full body paralysis and improper breathing. Artificial ventilation was a must to keep him alive, he added.

A team of doctors comprising M. Balasburamanian, Sivakumar and Nandhini Kuppusamy, along with paramedical staff, treated the boy.

He was under ventilator support for more than 100 days.

In fact, he was breathing through the ventilator only.

Five doses of Intravenous Immunoglobulin injection, east costing Rs.15,000 and other medicines were administered to him to expedite recovery.
