In line with a direction of the Supreme Court, DMK general secretary K.Anbazhagan today filed his written submission with the Karnataka High Court that prayed for confirming the sentence and fine imposed by the special court on former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa and three others in the Disproportionate Assets case.

“It is humbly prayed that this court may be pleased to take into consideration the written arguments filed in this case and confirm the sentence and fine imposed by the trial judge on all accused under the appropriate penal provisions of law charged and render justice,” the DMK leader submitted in his 81-page written submission here.

A three-judge Bench of the Supreme Court earlier today ruled that the appointment of Special Public Prosecutor Bhavani Singh is “bad in law” but it does not warrant “de novo” (fresh) hearing of appeals of the convicts, including the AIADMK chief. The Bench had also allowed Mr. Anbazhagan and Karnataka to file written submissions in the High Court by tomorrow.

Mr. Anbazhagan submitted that the defence witnesses, including Ms. Jayalalithaa, have not adduced any valuable evidence to discard the prosecution. The DMK leader also said that the defence witnesses’ evidence satisfactorily account for the possession of huge assets disproportionate to the known income of Ms. Jayalalithaa.
