A host of projects of Ambattur Municipality, work on many of which began two years ago, will be commissioned next month.

Among them will be the development of Mangal eri in Mogappair as a recreational facility. The project could not be completed as scheduled within a year of the launch of the work for various reasons, including the time taken to remove encroachments. Retenders were also necessitated as there were no bidders initially.

A senior official of the municipality said that work to strengthen the bund and provide seating arrangements and public convenience was now under way. The waterbody spread over 1.5 acres is being revamped at a cost of Rs.75 lakh.

“We also plan to revive 10 more waterbodies in various areas that have been neglected and heavily polluted,” the official said.

The local body proposes to spend Rs.1 crore on the waterbodies, including desilting, development of parks and construction of compound walls. The ponds in many areas, including Padi, Oragadam, Kamarajapuram and Mogappair, have been identified for the project.

Residents living near the Thangal lake in Vijayalakshmipuram may soon be relieved of groundwater pollution as the waterbody is also being rehabilitated at a cost of Rs.38 lakh. B

esides diverting the sewage that is now being let into the lake, a park would be developed around the waterbody. An additional fund of Rs.30 lakh to provide more facilities in the lake, spread over nearly three acres, is awaiting the council’s approval. Work is expected to be completed in June.

Other projects of the municipality, whose completion has been delayed by over a year, are construction of gasifier crematorium and slaughter house.

A meeting is set to be convened this month-end to auction the slaughter house in Kallikuppam.

Though construction of the gasifier crematorium started along with that of a similar facility in Madhavaram municipality, it suffered many hiccups in the past two years owing to problems in identifying the site. The crematorium would become operational in March and would be maintained by Vaikundavasam Trust.

The millennium park in Anna Nagar West would be opened in April after completion of the improvement work worth Rs.45 lakh.
