Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Tuesday refuted the allegation that the nomination paper of Communist Party of India (Marxist)'s candidate K. Chandrasekaran in a by-election to a ward of the Madurai Municipal Corporation was rejected in an arbitrary manner.
Intervening in a debate in the Assembly on the motion of thanks to Governor, Mr. Stalin cited the reasons for the rejection.
The name of the proposer for the nominee was missing. Mr. Chandrasekaran did not submit necessary documents along with his affidavit. Moreover, his name was mentioned as Chandrasekar in the electoral roll.

Mr. Stalin pointed out that originally, four persons had filed nominations.
When the CPI (M) deputy leader N. Nanmaran referred to the intervention of the State Election Commission in the matter, the Deputy Chief Minister said that subsequent to the SEC's directive to the poll official to accept the nomination, an interim injunction of the Commission's decision was obtained from the Madras High Court.
Only after getting the advice of government lawyers, the nominee of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam was declared unopposed, Mr. Stalin said.

He said that there would be no bar in moving the appropriate court once the election process was over.
