A five-day academic audit is now under way at the Madurai Kamaraj University here as a major step towards good “academic leadership” and quality improvement in tune with the requirements of the current challenging academic environment.
The internal academic audit from August 31 to September 4 is being chaired by Vice-Chancellor R. Karpaga Kumaravel in the presence of a committee of experts.
The committee members include G. Pankajam, former Vice-Chancellor, Gandhigram Rural University, M. Jayashankar, former Director, Bharathidasan Institute of Management, K. Dharmalingam, chairman, Internal Quality Assurance Cell, MKU, K. Veluthambi, Planning/ Development Officer and P. Gunasekaran, Special Officer of the university.

“The internal audit exercise had addressed all dimensions needed in today’s challenging academic environment. An academic climate driven by demands for better academic leadership, accountability and transparency has created new demands and our university is responding to that,” Dr. Karpaga Kumaravel said on Wednesday.
All the departments and schools in MKU were being covered in the audit and a model would be evolved to meet or even exceed the stakeholders’ expectations, he said. “The audit has been undertaken to provide quality education to students,” the Vice-Chancellor said.
The committee members are visiting all departments/ schools in the varsity and meeting faculty members to discuss individual achievements and projects handled by them, research grants, current enrolment of students and research students guided by them.

During the assessment so far, the committee had found that some schools/departments had attracted extramural grants to the tune of Rs.10 crore to Rs. 20 crore during the Tenth Plan period.
The Vice-Chancellor said the contributions of individual faculty members were assessed and some were graded as excellent.
