7 patents to be announced at VIT fest

The three day annual carnival will be inaugurated on September 25

Seven patents born out of the ideas originating from participants in graVITas’ 2014 — the annual international knowledge carnival conducted by the VIT University — will be announced during the 3-day graVITas’ 2015.

The event will be inaugurated at the VIT campus here on September 25. Four of the patents will be filed in the name of VIT while the other three will be filed in the name of the external students/institutions which participated in the event last year.

Platform for ideas

Briefing newspersons about the event here on Wednesday, Sekar Viswanathan, Vice-President of VIT said that graVITas’ 2015, organised jointly by the faculty and students, is a platform for exhilarating ideas, lending a framework to transform latent concepts into viable technical solutions to real world scientific problems.

In all, there will be 126 technical and management events this year, he said.

Shikhar Mittal, student organizer said that one of the patents to be released during the event would relate to agriculture, two to the manufacturing sector, one to transportation and three to IT (cloud computing and big data).

Theme of event

The announcement of the patents would be in tune with the theme of carnival graVITas’ 2015, `Create, Design, Patent’.

Anand A. Samuel, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of VIT said that as many as 20,000 VIT students and 7000 external students from 1031 colleges and universities in the country would be participating in the event.

K. Kannabhiran, Director, Students’ Welfare said that for the first time, graVITas will include dedicated events for school students.

Out of the 4000 projects of school students received by VIT, one each from the 4000 schools, mostly alma maters of the VIT students and of other students who participated in last year’s graVITas, 25 projects of social importance have been shortlisted for presentation by the respective students at the forthcoming graVITas.

Abhay, student organizer said that graVITas’ 2015 will have 40 state-of-the-art workshops on topics such as robotics, web development and cloud computing.

Release of VIT’s products

Another salient feature of this year’s event would be the release of some of the VIT’s products, viz., a 3-D printer, VIT 3-D model and Vellore App.

The latter is a product based on the San Francisco model which will enable those having the Vellore App on their mobile phones to locate the restaurants in Vellore and book their seats in the dining room in advance.

S. Narayanan, Pro-Vice-Chancellor said that graVITas’ 2015 will be inaugurated by Ramesh Kaza, Senior Vice-President, Bank of America, Hyderabad at 9.30 a.m. on Friday.

Other guests on the inaugural day include Rajiv Vaishnav, Vice-President, NASSCOM, Mumbai, B. Purush Vankireddy, General Manager, Microsoft India, Hyderabad and Kamal Sharad Shah, General Manager, WIPRO, Chennai.

G. Viswanathan, VIT Chancellor will preside over the function. G. Satheesh Reddy, Scientific Advisor to the Union Defence Minister will be the chief guest at the valedictory function on September 27.
