In a move aimed at weaning fishermen away from unsustainable trawler fishing in shallow waters, the State government on Thursday said that subsidy for fishermen would be raised from 25 to 50 per cent for tuna long-liners. Mr. Panneerselvam said a sum of Rs. 30 crore would be set apart. For providing relief assistance during the lean season, increasing the ban period relief amount and for fuel subsidy, the government allocated Rs. 200 crore.
A modernised fish landing centre would be developed in Mudasalodai in Cuddalore district at a cost of Rs 7.78 crore. Two fish processing parks would be established at Ramanathapuram and Tiruvallur. The State government would upgrade 100 veterinary sub-centres into veterinary dispensaries. Distribution of milch cows, sheep and goats and the Fodder Augmentation Scheme would continue in the present financial year. A total of 12,000 milch cows and six lakh sheeps and goats would be distributed to women at a cost of Rs. 250 crore.
