30 more fishermen held

The Sri Lankan Navy arrested 30 Indian fishermen off Kankesanthurai in Jaffna on Wednesday night. According to Navy spokesman Kosala Warnakulasuriya, a total of eight trawlers were also confiscated.

The arrest follows the detention of 110 Indian fishermen on Wednesday for allegedly engaging in illegal activity off Sri Lanka’s eastern coast.

“The number of Indian trawlers fishing in Sri Lankan waters has increased of late. We don’t know how to curb this practice. The only option we have is to arrest them, hoping it will deter them from trespassing in future,” Mr. Warnakulasuriya told
