Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) has shortlisted three sites in the coastal Kadaladi block for establishing a 4,000 MW mega thermal power plant at a cost of Rs. 24,000 crore.
Chief Minister's announcement
Acting swiftly after Chief Minister Jayalalithaa made an announcement to this effect in the Assembly under Rule 110 on September 1, 2015, Tangedco, with the active support of former Collector K. Nanthakumar, selected the sites, each measuring 2,000 acres.

The three sites were selected at Kondunallanpatti, S. Tharaikudi, Naripaiyur, and Kannirajapuram villages and Valinokkam and Siraikulam villages, sources in Tangedco said.
A Chennai-based private firm had done a feasibility study and it was being studied by Tangedco, the sources said, adding all the three sites were located close to the shore and one of them would be selected by Union Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) based on the feasibility report.

After selecting a site, the MoEF would make ‘Terms of References’, thereby giving its approval for carrying out various environmental studies and obtaining clearance for establishing the 5x800 MW project, the sources said.
“Presently, the whole work has come to a halt because of the election process and it will pick up momentum soon after the completion of the election process,” the sources added.
Uppur plant
The 1,600 MW thermal power plant, being established at Uppur in Thiruvadanai taluk at a cost of Rs. 12,178 crore, was also set for take off as public sector Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) laid the foundation stone for establishing boiler turbine generator (BTG) package on February 29, the sources said.
BHEL would start the work after the district administration handed over 767.80 acres of private lands and 227.36 acre government promboke lands to Tangedco.
The corporation had deposited with the revenue department Rs. 5.22 crore for the purpose of distribution of compensation to private landowners, the sources added.
