Three persons were arrested on Sunday for allegedly hurling a bomb near the house of a member of the movement opposing the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant, police said.

The arrests were made on a complaint from Venaziz, a member of the People’s Movement Against Nuclear Energy (PMANE), that four persons hurled the bomb at his house in Idinthakarai, near Kudankulam, on Saturday and escaped, they said. The bomb exploded with a loud noise but did not cause any damage.

According to the complaint, the four, including one Kapoor, stated to be a contractor involved with KNPP, had shouted, “This (hurling of bombs) will happen daily and we will not rest till we wipe out this village.”

Later, the bike-borne accused also hurled another bomb at nearby Tsunami Nagar before fleeing. However, they were recognised by three villagers, it said.

Anti-nuclear activists charged that the bombs had been hurled to create disturbance in the village and divide the people, who have been demanding the scrapping of the Indo-Russian project citing safety concerns.
