1.47 lakh saplings to be planted to combat desertification

As part of observing the World Day to Combat Desertification on June 17, a total of 1.47 lakh saplings will be planting at various places in the district.

Inaugurating the programme by planting a sapling at Keelsathambur Panchayat, Collector V. Dakshinamoorthy said that workers under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme would be planting the saplings across all panchayat unions in the district.

Planting of saplings would be done in the panchayats of Elachipalayam (10,015 saplings), Erumapatty (12,142), Kabilarmalai (12,061), Kolli Hills (18,452), Mallasumudram (9,025), Mohanur (10,787), Namagiripettai (10,954), Namakkal (9,387), Paramathi (8,994), Pallipalayam (4,875), Puduchatram (9,320), Rasipuram (6,460), Sendamangalam (8,116), Tiruchengode (8,750) and in Vennandur (8,537 saplings). Hence, a total of 1,47,875 saplings would be planted in all the 15 panchayat unions, he added.

A total of 270 saplings were planted along the roadside between Thasipalayam and Keelsathambur on June 17. Hence, a total of 6,800 saplings were planted in 15 panchayat unions on that day as apart of inauguration.
