130 boys, girls take part in cycle race

More than 130 boys and girls took part in a cycle race, organised every year in connection with the birth anniversary celebration of former Chief Minister C.N. Annadurai, here on Saturday.

Boys and girls of United Matriculation Higher Secondary School and Kumaran Middle School won the laurels. Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT) organised the ‘Anna birthday Cycle Race,’ in which 95 boys and 45 girls in the age groups of 13, 15 and 17 vied for the honours. Johnson Kalaiselvan, vice-president of State Cycling Association, flagged off the race in the presence of R. Prabakaran, president, District Cycling Association.

The race was held separately for boys and girls in three age groups, R. Venkataraman, District Sports and Youth Welfare Officer, said.

The boys cycled for 15 km (13 years), 20 km (15 years) and 25 km (17 years) and the girls for 10 km (13 years) and 15 km (15 and 17 years ), he said.

R. Kaleeswaran from United Matriculation school won the first prize and V. Vinodh from United Middle school, the second prize in the 13 years category. J. Janet from Kendriya Vidyalaya, Mandapam, and M. Janani from Kumarn Middle School won the first and second prizes in the category.

In the 15 years category, R. Prasath from United Middle School and P.S. Sakthivel from Syed Ammal Higher Secondary School won the first and second prizes respectively. J Jennifer from Schwartz Matriculation Higher Secondary School was the lone girl to complete the race in this category. She won the first prize.

In the 17 years category, M. Chandran from Pallivasal Higher Secondary School and Karuppaiah from DD Vinayagar Higher Secondary School won the first and second prizes respectively. Girls did not participate under this category, Mr Venkataraman said. The winners received prizes.
