Tension prevails in the coastal village of Chinna Muttom near Kanniyakumari following a clash between two groups on Thursday night.

Police said election to the parish council of Chinna Muttom was held on Thursday, in which two teams – one led by Sylvester and the other by Soundararajan – contested intensely. The team led by Mr. Sylvester won the election again and retained power, but Mr. Soundararajan’s team objected to the election of the accountant stating that he had studied only up to class III.

As Mr. Soundararajan’s team demanded that a person with a minimum qualification of a pass in class VIII should be appointed as accountant, it led to a heated argument between the groups. Then, a clash erupted between them, and stones and clubs were liberally used by the groups. Thirteen persons sustained injuries in the clash and they have been admitted to different hospitals.

On receiving information, Superintendent of Police N. Shreenatha rushed to the spot with police personnel and armed reserve policemen were deployed in the coastal village. The police registered cases against 70 persons from both sides, and arrested 10 persons.
