1 killed, 3 injured in blast

One person was killed and three others sustained injuries in a blast at a defunct fireworks factory at Vaiyavoor, near here on Sunday.

According to police, the incident took place at around 6 p.m. when a group of four persons trespassed into the closed factory to consume alcohol and in the process Kalirasu (27) of Tuticorin, lit a cigarette near a room where chemical powders used to be stored. Subsequently, a blast occurred and the room collapsed, killing Kalirasu on the spot. Others, Karvendan (25) of Tuticorin, who was doing cloth business along with the deceased and their friends, Gokul (21) and Venu (24) of Kancheepuram, sustained injuries and were rushed to the District Government Headquarters hospital, police said.
