Traffic is rapidly increasing along Vayalur Road from Puthur Four Road Junction to Somarasampettai. There are many arterial roads from Bharathi Nagar, Kumaran Nagar, Srinivasa Nagar, Ammayappa Nagar, Geetha Nagar and Shanmuga Nagar which join the main Vayalur Road. Motorists drive along Vayalur main road at breakneck speed even at the junction points. It leads to accidents. Speed-breakers and speed-limit sign boards at vulnerable points should be provided to avoid traffic snarl. Police should be posted at these points during peak hours. Police are found at Padma Pazhamudhir Cholai and at Arasan Bakery only. I request the authorities to take earnest steps to facilitate smooth traffic along Vayalur Road.

“Construct toilets”
The Ponmalai market near the Golden Rock workshop was established during the British era to cater to the needs of railway employees and their families of the workshop. It has become a nerve centre of public activities. On Sundays, it is pulsating with activity. Over 1,000 traders assemble to sell their commodities and 10,000 consumers visit the market. But the public toilet is poorly maintained. Either the railway administration or the corporation should construct pay and use toilets.

“Remove vendors”
Removal of encroachment in around the Chintamani area had a salutary effect. The broadened road enables smooth traffic flow. The corporation should not permit buses to be parked near Kamarajar statue as other vehicles find it difficult to cross this place. Likewise, in Srirangam all pavement vendors in Ammamndapam road, near Rajagopuram, Devi Theatre junction and North Devi Street must be removed. The MLA and the Mayor must pay a visit to these places.

Traffic chaos
Heavy vehicles are parked in front of Dr. Maduram Corporation School throughout the day creating difficulty to students and teachers. Girls and students coming on bicycles face more difficulties. A number of representations have gone in vain. Urgent action should be taken to clear the traffic chaos in the area.

Poor lighting arrangements
The Mannarpuram traffic intersection with multiple automatic traffic signals is a dangerous intersection with a large number of vehicles passing through it at high speed. Lighting arrangements is also not enough. Traffic rules are not followed by motorists.

Walking track
While cleaning the Uyyankondan canal some additional works were taken up. One such work relates to laying a walking track along the canal banks near the court complex. This work was stopped due to Assembly elections. Though a month has passed, this work is yet to be resumed. Debris is still lying all around. It seems that the corporation has planned this track for a length of 200 metres, which is insufficient. It can be extended up to the new bridge to facilitate sufficient length for one to take a walking exercise. Hope the authorities will take up this work and complete it as early as possible for the benefit of residents.

“Increase speed”
Suvidha specials run between Chennai and Tirunelveli with 10 stoppages and the journey time is around 14 hours. Nellai Express, which runs in the same route with 15 stoppage, takes less than 12 hours and the fare is less. The railway authorities should run Suvidha specials with high speed to cover this distance in 10 to 11 hours since the fare is very high with no extra comfort.

First aid boxes
The first aid boxes in buses are not maintained properly. On my recent journey to Kumbakonam, a septuagenarian suffered a bruise in his fingers while trying to open a glass window while travelling in a bus. But the first aid box was not well stocked. I request the authorities to ensure proper maintenance of first aid boxes in buses.

A major issue
Minors drive two-wheelers with no respect for traffic rules. They drive at break neck speed exposing other road users to danger of accidents. Parents of minors should be blamed squarely for this menace as their act not only endangers the life of the public but also the minor children. The traffic police should take a serious view of this violation and book cases against the vehicles driven by minors. No leniency should be shown by the law enforcers to such violations. I request the police to take a deterrent action in the matter.

“Use waste water”
Wastewater spoils the environment. If apartments, hotels, hostels and other big buildings collect their wastewater through an underground tank, it can be used to water trees and plants. Sadly, hotels, colleges, schools and apartments buy fresh water at hefty sum to water plants and trees. For those who collect wastewater it can be a money spinner too. We can create acres of forest wealth with the help of wastewater and protect the environment.

“Remove encroachments”
Rockfort Temple and its Teppakulam add to the beauty of Tiruchi. People from far and wide throng the area. But NSB road, Chinnakadai Veedhi, Nandi Koil Street and Periyakadai Veedhi leading to Rockfort Temple are crowded with platform shops and encroachment by big merchants. It is very difficult for pedestrians to walk on the roads. I request the Corporation to do the needful to preserve the heritage of Tiruchi.
