P. Ramkumar, the accused in the sensational murder of Infosys techie Swathi, reportedly told the police on Sunday that he murdered her as she made sarcastic remarks about his appearance.

Assistant Commissioner of Police, Nungambakkam, Devaraj, along with two Village Administrative Officers had met Ramkumar at the Tirunelveli Government Medical College Hospital, where he was recuperating after a surgery to reconstruct his slit throat, to obtain his statement.

According to sources, he claimed in his statement that he had visited Chennai in August 2015 to attend coaching classes to clear his BE arrear papers. Simultaneously, he was also searching for some job and happened to see Swathi in a temple in Choolaimedu in September last year. Smitten by her, he proposed to Swathi in November but she warned him not to pursue her.

Some months later, emboldened that the girl had not complained to anyone, Ramkumar again accosted her and proposed marriage to her. He claimed that Swathi was furious and made some remarks mocking at his physical appearance.

Agitated over this, he murdered her on June 24, a police officer said, quoting the statement of the accused.
