SUV mows down four, injures eight in Bangalore

Police said the driver, identified as Bommanahalli Municipality former chariman Krishnappa, was under the influence of alcohol.

Four persons, including two women, were killed and eight seriously injured when a sports utility vehicle (SUV) driven by the former chairman of Bommanahalli City Municipal Council Krishnappa ran over them at Parappana Agrahara junction on Hosur Road on Monday night.

Mr. Krishnappa fled leaving behind the vehicle. Indrani (40), Pushparani (45), Vijay Kumar (35) and Raja Nayak (20) died in the accident. The injured were rushed to St. John’s Hospital and to other private hospitals.

Mr. Krishnappa, a landlord, who owns a bar and several properties, was driving his SUV on Hosur road allegedly in a drunken state.

Near Channakeshava English School, around 10 p.m., Mr. Krishnappa lost control and rammed into pedestrians, including the four dead, before hitting pushcarts alongside the road, crashing into the school fence and stopping after hitting a tree. The impact of the accident was so high that a part of the tree chipped off while the front of SUV was crushed.

Mr. Krishnappa who was saved by the vehicle’s air bag of the car fled leaving behind his vehicle. The Electronics City traffic police are looking out for Mr. Krishnappa.

According to the police, Mr. Krishnappa already has several criminal cases including dowry death, attempt to murder and cheating cases against him.

Pushparani, from Salem, along with Janakaraj had come to Bangalore to invite her niece Indrani for her son’s wedding scheduled in September. Once done, Indrani and Govindaraju were walking with Pushparani and Janakaraj to board a bus back to Salem. The SUV killed Indrani and Pushparani, while Govindaraju and Janakaraj escaped with injuries.

Raja Nayak was working as vegetable vendor at Parappana Agrahara and had lost his father only a month ago. His mother had died earlier. He was living with his sister and her family and was engaged to her niece recently. Vijay Kumar was from Hiriyur taluk in Chitradurga. He came to the city about a month ago with his friends Raja Nayak and Harish. The three were working in a hotel. Naik is survived by his wife Chitra and children Pavan (6) and Manya (3). The injured Lalithamma, 44, Mallesh, 45, M. Rekha, 26, Rajesh, 26, and Harish, 23, along with Janakraj and Govindaraju are being treated at various hospitals and are out of danger.
