Contradicting reports that it had compelled the Bharatiya Janata Party to name Narendra Modi the party’s prime ministerial candidate, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh leader M.G. Vaidya wrote in the RSS mouthpiece, Organiser , on Saturday that the Sangh gave its consent only after receiving a proposal from the BJP.
The senior Sangh leader said the RSS does not dictate who should be made Prime Minister, Chief Minister, Minister, MP or MLA, but only gives its advice whenever there is a dispute and its adviceis sought. “As regards Narendrabhai Modi’s choice, the proposal must have come from BJP quarters and [the] Sangh would have given its consent. If there is a difference of opinion about a certain decision, Sangh’s help is sought. Sangh does not dictate as to who should be made MP or MLA or Minister or Chief Minister or PM. Sangh’s only concern is that the state must function for the nation’s interest. ”
Mr. Vaidya also contradicted reports that said the RSS had promised in 1949 that it would not enter politics when the ban on the organisation was lifted “The fact is that no promise as such was given. No power in the country can stop an individual or a group from entering politics.”
