BJP president Rajnath Singh on Tuesday urged Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi to withdraw the allegation that the RSS was behind the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi.
Kick-starting the party’s campaign at a public meeting here, he asked Mr. Gandhi to read and understand history. He said following the assassination, the RSS was banned and subsequently the then Congress government accepted that the allegation was baseless. Later the Kapoor Commission, which probed the murder, also accepted that the charge against the RSS was baseless.
Mr. Singh accused Mr. Gandhi of indulging in politics of falsehoods and said the crisis of credibility in politics increased because of the Congress. He also demanded that the Centre make public the report of the Thakkar Commission, which probed the assassination of the then Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi, in 1984. He said the report should be made public to enable the people to know who was behind the conspiracy.

Referring to BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, he said that never in the history of independent India so many political attacks were made against an individual as against Mr. Modi, adding diamond had to be sharpened by hitting with a hammer to increase its shine. He appealed to non-Congress parties to work for ensuring a Congress-free India.
