Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday convened a meeting of the Alliance Committee of the party which is looking into the issue of forging alliances with various parties.

During the meeting, Mr. Gandhi was briefed on the developments related to Aam Aadmi Party’s dharna in Delhi which was led by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

Party sources said Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde, who is also a member of the Committee and who met the Delhi Police Commissioner in his North Block office earlier in the afternoon, briefed Mr. Gandhi on the protests and the attempts being made to bring it to an end.

A little while later Congress general secretary in-charge of communication, publicity and publication Ajay Maken made an appeal to the Aam Aadmi Party to call off its agitation. Mr. Maken, who appeared to be in the know of the behind the scene consultations to end the imbroglio, said people of Delhi were suffering due to the agitation.

He criticised the AAP leaders for using crude language while referring to the Home Minister. On the other hand, he pointed out that the Congress leaders always maintained decorum and address the AAP leader with a “ji” suffixed to his name.

Within five minutes of Mr. Maken’s appeal, Mr. Kejriwal called off his protest.
