Reservation in promotions in government jobs would divide society and it was against the basic principles of social justice, Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Mulayam Singh Yadav told party workers at the organisation’s headquarters here on Monday.

Mr. Yadav described the move as a dangerous ploy to create fissures in society. “This is why our party has opposed the Constitutional Amendment Bill for granting quota in promotions in government jobs. Inequality in society would increase if the proposal is implemented.”

The SP, however, favoured separate quota for Muslims in government jobs. It had raised the issue in Parliament. The SP would continue the struggle till it was achieved, he said.

Third front

On formation of a third front, he said it would automatically come into being after the 2014 Lok Sabha election, as neither the Congress nor the BJP would be able to form the next government. Both were engaged in shadow boxing and they did not want a third front to materialise. Third front governments had been formed thrice at the Centre, he said.
