Passage of Lokpal Bill to be delayed further

August 31, 2012 12:08 am | Updated 12:08 am IST - NEW DELHI:

The Rajya Sabha Select Committee on Lokpal/Lokayukta Bill has decided to seek an extension of its term as the process of examination of its contentious provisions is yet to be completed.

The committee, which was tasked to submit its report by the end of the monsoon session of Parliament, met here on Thursday and took stock of the progress made so far in consideration of contentious clauses in the Bill.

“That the report of the committee would be delayed beyond the monsoon session was a foregone conclusion as the process of consideration of the Bill is still in progress. We have come across several legal and administrative incongruities in the Bill as passed by the Lok Sabha,” a committee member said in an informal conversation.

The Bill which was passed in the lower House was referred to the select committee as several parties including some of the allies of the UPA had reservations on some of its provisions.

Without the support of the Opposition parties and the UPA allies, the government cannot get the Bill approved in the upper House.
