Amid reports of strain in the Congress-National Conference alliance in Jammu and Kashmir, the leaders of the two parties met here on Tuesday.
This was the first meeting between Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and National Conference leader Omar Abdullah and Congress president Sonia Gandhi after the announcement of the results of the Lok Sabha election in which both parties suffered reverses. A few days ago, reports from Jammu and Kashmir suggested that senior Congress leaders from the State had met leaders of the PDP, rival of the NC.
While there was no official word from the Congress and the NC on what transpired at Tuesday’s meeting, some view this interaction as an effort by the leadership to contain the demands within both parties for a parting of ways ahead of the Assembly elections later this year.
