Welcoming the decision to set up a commission of enquiry into “Snoopgate’’, Communist Party of India (Marxist) general secretary Prakash Karat said there was no merit in the BJP’s contention that the government’s decision was an attack on the federal structure.
According to Mr. Karat, this issue is not a State subject alone as the snooping was carried out beyond the jurisdiction of Gujarat. Besides, snooping was ordered by invoking provisions of the Indian Telegraph Act which is a central law.
On November 16 – soon after web portals Cobrapost and Gulail released details of the snooping on a woman allegedly at the behest of Mr. Modi – the CPI(M) Polit Bureau had said that ``in a case involving the Chief Minister it would be appropriate for a court investigation into his involvement’’.
