Mumbai Police Commissioner Satyapal Singh submitted his resignation to the State Home Department on Thursday as he plans to explore a career in politics.
The Home Department accepted Mr. Singh’s resignation on Friday with immediate effect. “Until the time the government decides the next Commissioner of Police for Mumbai, the Joint Commissioner of Police, Administration, Hemant Nagrale, will hold charge,” Home Minister R.R. Patil told The Hindu.
Sources said Mr. Singh had received offers from the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Aam Aadmi Party. The BJP is keen on fielding Mr. Singh in Meerut.

Speaking to the media, Mr. Singh said, “So far, I have worked in the limited jurisdiction of Mumbai while serving in the force. Now I would like to expand my area of operation and I would like to devote my time and energy to social harmony, national reconstruction and world peace,” Mr. Singh said.
“I have received offers from various political parties and I am weighing my options,” Mr. Singh said.
The 1980-batch officer was due for retirement in 2015.

The present Anti-Terrorism Squad chief, Rakesh Maria, and Additional Director General of Police, Law and Order, Maharashtra, Ahmed Javed are the frontrunners for the post.
