Mukul Rohatgi appointed A-G

After days of uncertainty, the NDA government finally appointed Mukul Rohatgi the 14th Attorney-General of India.

His appointment had appeared doubtful as names of other senior lawyers had been doing the rounds for the post. Complicating matters further, the government went ahead and appointed the Solicitor-General and other law officers in the Supreme Court.

This when Mr. Rohatgi had already given media interviews detailing his plans for a more efficient litigation mechanism. Official

Mr. Rohatgi, son of A.B. Rohatgi, a former judge of the Delhi High Court, had his legal practice confined to the High Court.

Career

The defining point of his career came in 1999 during the term of the Vajpayee government when the then Attorney-General, Soli Sorabjee, brought him to the Supreme Court as Additional Solicitor-General.
