“India needs young graduates to reach the height of technical work”

“India is yet to reach the height of technical work. Currently, it is way behind others. To reach the objective, it needs young graduates,” said C. Mohan, IBM fellow and former IBM India Chief Scientist on Monday.

Inaugurating a three-day international conference on Information Systems & Software Engineering conducted by the Department of IT and Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Meenakshi Sundararajan Engineering College, he asked the students to improve their soft skills whether they opted for managerial or non-managerial posts.

“Doing good work alone is not enough. It is equally important that one should be able to convey messages in the competitive world,” he said.

Mr.Mohan urged the students to draw up a long term vision regarding their career as they have lot of opportunities to choose from.

“Not many are getting into academics. We also need faculty to guide research students. Firm up your plans. It could be a job, research or higher studies. Like managerial, even technical posts would enable students to reach their goals. Stay in technical career and work for a long time,” he said.

Welcoming the gathering, College Principal K.S. Babai said that in the last three years they had achieved 100 per cent in placements and for the last two years, they were ranked number one in academic results by Anna University. They were proposing to start Mechanical Engineering course soon.

College IT Professor Chandra Aiyangar said that they had received about 250 papers from 15 countries for the conference on varied titles – data mining, internet technology, e-Business, software engineering and software quality and metrics – of which 42 were short-listed. About 20 per cent of the papers were presented by international delegates from USA, Canada, Ireland, Iran and France.
