Lalit Modi’s lawyer Mehmood Abdi has sought police protection after gangster Ravi Pujari allegedly threatened him if he failed to “desist from attending Lalit Modi’s matter.” Sources in the Anti-Extortion Cell of Mumbai Police Crime Branch has taken over the investigations after Mr. Abdi lodged a complaint with the Oshiwara police station.

According to the complaint, the lawyer received a call at 2:17 p.m. on Sunday from an international number +385830****0. “The caller identified himself as Ravi Pujari speaking from Australia. The caller questioned as to why I am defending Lalit Modi. I told him that I am doing my duty as his legal counsel. However the caller went on saying that he has bumped off a lawyer in Bangalore. He threatened me to desist from attending Lalit Modi’s matter else he will harm me and my family,” it says.

A police officer from the AEC said the number originates in a foreign country but the call was made using a Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) service which means its location could not be traced. “VOIP services cannot be tracked,” he said.
