Police resorted to mild lathi-charge and lobbed smoke grenades to disperse a group of pro-Left Youth wing activists as their march to the District Collectorate here on Wednesday to protest the United Democratic Front moves to enhance the pension age of government employees up to 56, turned violent.
The protest march turned violent as the demonstrators were prevented from entering into the collectorate premises forcing the police to use force to dissuade them from advancing further.
However, the scenario turned for worse as a group of protesters pelted stones against the police forcing them to lob smoke grenades after police resorting mild lathi-charge failed to disperse them, police sources here said.

As many as 10 policemen, including Assistant Superintendent of Police Mr. Shibu and a Circle Inspector, sustained injuries in the stone pelting, they said, adding that over 10 protestors were taken into custody in connection with the march, taken out as part of the State-wide agitation to protest the raising of pension age of government employees by a year.
