World Bank offers help for farming

The World Bank has offered support for the government to take up sustainable and environment-friendly methods of farming, promote cultivation of millets and value addition of crops and ensure guaranteed income of farmers for post- flood recovery of the agriculture sector.

A team of World Bank officials who held discussions with Agriculture Minister V.S.Sunil Kumar here on Thursday mooted steps to promote eco-friendly agricultural practices in the Kuttanad and Kole regions and sustainable methods of farming in the highlands. They also recommended a revamp of the Agriculture Department based on agro ecological zones.

Mr. Sunil Kumar stressed the need for better coordination between departments and agencies in Kuttanad.

The Minister said efforts were on to integrate traditional farming methods with fisheries, livestock and poultry farming, soil conservation and farm tourism and promote good agricultural practices.

The Minister said the department would prepare projects and submit it to the World Bank for approval.
