Kerala should adopt water auditing to curb wastage, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has said. He was inaugurating the Alappuzha drinking water supply scheme here on Saturday.
The project, which cost about ₹200 crore, envisages water supply to Alappuzha town and neighbouring panchayats. The project will provide drinking water to 1,77,000 people in Alappuzha town and 2,60,000 residents in the panchayats of Purakkad, Ambalappuzha south, Punnapra south, Punnapra north, Aryad, Mannancherry and Mararikkulam south.
Mr. Vijayan said the prevailing situation warranted extreme care in utilisation of water.

Rain water harvesting should be made mandatory in households. Most districts were taking care to protect water resources. Alappuzha needed to take more care in this regard.
The Chief Minister called for developing a culture to rejuvenate ponds with the help of local populace. National employment guarantee scheme could be implemented for cleaning up canals and streams. Water resources could be made potable. Public awareness should be created against contamination of water resources.
