Leader of the Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan has said that “there is rampant corruption in the functioning of the inter-State Walayar check-post under the United Democratic Front (UDF) government rule now.”
Inaugurating a march to the check-post organised on Saturday by the Pudussery Area Committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI-M] at Walayar against the alleged corruption and inordinate delay in clearing vehicles, Mr. Achuthanandan said during the previous Left Democratic Front rule Walayar had been made a corruption-free check-post.
His government had launched a ‘corruption-free check-post campaign’ to prevent leakage in tax revenue, Mr. Achuthanandan said.

“The LDF government had succeeded in tackling corruption at Walayar and at other check-posts. It had also reduced the delay in clearing goods vehicles through the check-posts by taking various steps. A social audit was also done to assess the effectiveness of the anti-corruption drive.”
But, he said, the UDF government discontinued the campaign and Walayar returned to the old corrupt ways resulting in loss of crores of rupees to the exchequer and hardship to those who brought goods to the State through the check-post.
The Opposition leader threatened to launch a mass agitation on the issue.
