Ulloor flyover to be extended by 53 m

October 20, 2017 12:30 am | Updated November 25, 2017 10:40 am IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

Administrative nod for work on three flyovers

The 390-m flyover proposed towards Medical College side at the busy Ulloor Junction, as part of the 21.8-km Pallipuram Technocity-Karamana Light Metro corridor, will be increased by 53 m.

A decision to increase the length of the flyover, by 26.5 metres each on both sides, by altering the slope from the initial 1/20 to 1/25 had been approved by the technical committee set up by the government to accord technical approval for flyovers proposed by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) in the Light Metro corridors.

With this, the cost of the flyover will go up from the initial ₹52.68 crore that include ₹26 crore for land acquisition. Besides the flyover at Ulloor, flyovers will also come up at Sreekaryam, Pattom, and Thampanoor.

The two-lane flyover at Ulloor will begin from near the petrol pump after Kochulloor on NH 66 and end near the city Corporation’s rest house on the Medical College side, official sources said.

The DMRC, the interim consultant for preparatory work on the mass rapid transit system (MRTS), had avoided the MRTS corridor while conceiving the flyover as part of the Light Metro. The suggestion of the present government to the DMRC to look into extending the Ulloor flyover beyond Medical College junction to ease the bottleneck at the busy junction, where five roads meet, was found not feasible.

Managing director of Kerala Rapid Transit Corporation Ltd (KRTL), the special purpose vehicle set up under the PWD to execute the Light Metro; Chief Engineers, PWD (NH) and PWD (Roads and Bridges); and the Director of Natpac are the members of the technical committee.

Administrative sanction has been given to ₹272.84 crore work on the flyovers at Sreekaryam, Ulloor, and Pattom to be constructed using funds of Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB).

The technical committee has to take a call on the flyover at Pattom as it has been decided to extend it to Plamoodu Junction.

Nod awaited

The drawings of 657-m two-tier flyover proposed from RMS Junction to Chenthitta on the Overbridge-Thampanoor-Karamana MRTS corridor submitted by DMRC is awaiting nod.
