The United Democratic Front (UDF) on Friday boycotted a function organised by the Left Democratic Front government to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the first Ministry that assumed office in the State after reorganisation of States.
The UDF will not participate in the functions, including seminars, being organised in the next three days.
Addressing a press conference here, Mr. Thankachan said the decision had been taken to mark the UDF’s opposition to the LDF government’s policies.

The LDF government’s decision disbanding the director boards of 14 district cooperative banks was unconstitutional. The UDF would face this politically and legally. It had already moved the High Court and would carry the fight to the Supreme Court, if necessary, Mr. Thankachan said.
There was no cause for any celebration in the State during the one year that the LDF had been in power. The State had witnessed a sort of cultural degeneration. Law-and-order situation had deteriorated, with alarming increase in women and child abuse cases.
Cultural personalities were, however, silent about these developments. The State itself was going through an economic crisis, incurring a huge expenditure in the name of the 60th anniversary could not be justified, Mr. Thankachan said.

People’s forums
The UDF high-power committee decided to organise people’s forums in all the 140 Assembly constituencies on May 25 to highlight the shortcomings of the Pinarayi Vijayan Ministry, which would complete one year in office on that day. The UDF would take out an Assembly march on May 16 in protest against the government decision on district cooperative banks.
